Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi has recorded strong passenger growth during the first half of FY27, reinforcing its position as one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
According to data provided by GMR Airports, the airport handled approximately 38.5 million passengers between April and September 2026.
This represents a five per cent increase compared with 36.7 million passengers recorded during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Domestic passenger traffic accounted for approximately 28.1 million travellers, while international traffic contributed another 10.4 million.
Aircraft movements also increased during the period, rising 6.9 per cent to 233,331.
The growth reflects continued demand for domestic and international air travel, supported by India’s expanding aviation network and increasing connectivity.
Delhi airport currently operates three passenger terminals and four runways, with an annual passenger-handling capacity of approximately 106 million.
The airport’s long-term development plans aim to increase this capacity further to accommodate future passenger growth.
However, maintaining operational efficiency while handling increasing passenger volumes will remain an important challenge.
The latest figures demonstrate the growing importance of Delhi as an international gateway and a major connecting hub for Indian aviation.
