Emirates Flight Faces Major Delay After Bird Strike at Delhi Airport

A bird strike involving an Emirates aircraft arriving from Dubai caused a significant disruption to its subsequent operations at Delhi airport.

On October 17, Emirates flight EK517 encountered a bird strike while arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Following the incident, the aircraft required inspection and necessary repairs before it could operate its scheduled return service.

The disruption affected passengers travelling from Delhi to Dubai, with the return flight delayed by more than 14 hours.

Emirates informed passengers that the aircraft would undergo the necessary technical checks and repairs. Hotel accommodation was also being arranged for affected travellers.

Bird strikes remain a significant operational concern for airports worldwide. Even when an aircraft lands safely, damage to engines, windshields or other components can require detailed engineering inspections before the aircraft is cleared for its next flight.

The incident also demonstrates how an isolated operational event can affect multiple flights and passenger schedules.

Airports and airlines continue to invest in wildlife management, bird detection and habitat control measures to minimise such risks.

A routine landing can sometimes become a major operational challenge when wildlife and aircraft operations intersect.
