A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Mashhad to Kermanshah in Iran was forced to return to Mashhad shortly after takeoff on September 15 after developing a serious technical problem. The aircraft landed safely, but severe vibrations inside the aircraft caused parts of the cabin ceiling and overhead fittings to come loose. No injuries have been reported.
The incident has attracted attention after videos from inside the aircraft showed passengers reacting in panic as the aircraft shook and cabin panels fell.
What Happened to the Sepehran Boeing 737?
The aircraft departed Mashhad at around 5:30 p.m. local time on a flight to Kermanshah. According to officials from the Razavi Khorasan provincial airport authority, the outer tread of one landing-gear tyre separated as the aircraft left the runway. Officials specifically said that the tyre itself did not necessarily “burst.”
After the aircraft became airborne, the crew reportedly informed air traffic control about an engine-related emergency and requested to return to Mashhad.
The Boeing 737 then experienced intense vibrations during the return flight. Video footage showed parts of the cabin interior coming loose, including ceiling lining and overhead fittings.
Why Did the Cabin Ceiling Come Down?
The exact cause of the cabin damage has not yet been publicly established.
The available reports indicate a possible sequence involving a tyre problem, a reported engine emergency and severe aircraft vibration. However, investigators will need to determine exactly how these events were connected.
Cabin ceiling panels are interior components rather than the aircraft’s primary structural roof. They are designed to cover wiring, ducting and other systems above the passenger cabin. Extremely strong vibration can potentially damage or dislodge interior panels and fittings.
Therefore, footage showing the ceiling coming down does not by itself mean that the aircraft’s main fuselage structure failed.
Boeing 737 Landed Safely
Despite the frightening situation inside the cabin, the pilots successfully returned the aircraft to Mashhad.
Passengers and crew were able to leave the aircraft safely after landing, and reports indicate that there were no injuries. Passengers were subsequently transferred to another aircraft to continue their journey to Kermanshah.
The runway was also temporarily closed for inspection following the incident before normal operations resumed.
Incident Follows Another Sepehran Boeing 737 Event
The September incident has received additional attention because another Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 was involved in an incident at Mashhad in August.
On August 25, 2026, a Sepehran Boeing 737-500 operating from Tehran to Mashhad reportedly veered off the runway after landing, with its nose landing gear collapsing. No injuries were reported in that incident either.
The two incidents are separate events, and there is currently no official finding establishing a connection between them.
Investigation Will Determine the Cause
The dramatic passenger videos provide evidence of the severe shaking and interior damage, but they do not establish the technical cause.
Iranian aviation authorities are expected to examine the aircraft, landing gear, tyres, engines and relevant maintenance records as part of the investigation.
For now, the key facts are clear: the Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 encountered a technical emergency shortly after takeoff, returned safely to Mashhad, and suffered significant cabin-interior damage during the event. No injuries were reported.
